The Lammermuirs
Lammermuirs are a hill range extending through the Scottish Borders, East Lothian and into Midlothian.
Their expanses of upland moorland and their signature smooth contours and big skies give a sense of remoteness, space and calm. In an increasingly urbanised and busy world, where wild spaces are rapidly diminishing, places like the Lammermuirs are essential for psychological and physical well-being.
Who we are
The Lammermuir Protection Group (LPG) was formed in 2004, with the aim of challenging the unchecked proliferation of wind turbines in the Lammermuir Hills. Friends of the Lammermuirs are individuals from all walks of life. Most are members of the hill community, living and working, spending leisure time here. Some are frequent visitors to this place and care for it; others are artists and writers who find creative inspiration here; yet others have businesses in the area.
The group’s concerns are the damage that windfarms can inflict on heritage landscape, wildlife and ecosytems, as well as the negative impact on tourism and the local economy. LPG believes that these adverse effects of wind power installations are unjustifiable in the absence of any evidence that they are responsible for reducing CO2 emissions. It seems to us that our community area is viewed as a soft target for money-making ventures.
With around 200 turbines built or consented in this hill range and over 200 more in the planning system, it is clear that saturation point has been reached. We think we have done more than most communities to support the government’s climate change targets and we are living with the resulting degradation of this environment.
